Trailhead Weather
A hiking forecast app that combines elevation data with weather models to predict conditions at the summit, not just the parking lot.
The problem
Weather apps tell you the forecast for a town. But if you’re hiking up 3,000 feet, the conditions at the top can be completely different — colder, windier, and sometimes snowing when it’s sunny at the trailhead.
What I built
Trailhead Weather takes a trail route, samples points along it, and adjusts the forecast for elevation at each one. You get a timeline of what to expect as you climb.
- Elevation-adjusted temperature and wind along the route
- “Turn-around time” warnings when afternoon storms are likely
- Works offline once a trail is loaded
What I learned
Handling map data efficiently on mobile was the hardest part. I ended up simplifying route geometry on the server so phones only download what they need.
